I actually know the reason for this. I'll try to explain without writing an essay. You are right, it is to do with the historic development of the English language. English is basically a Germanic language. In Germanic languages 'H' is a consonant, always pronounced, like in 'House'; so for Germanic words we always write 'a' not 'an; ''a house. 'a hand', 'a hat' - to write 'an house', 'an hand', 'an hat' is wrong. But English has literally thousands of loan words from French; most of them have been in the language for about 1,000 years and most people don't realise where they come from. All the words you give in your examples of where 'an' is used (historic, hysterical, heroic, horrific - you could have included hotel) are from French. In French, 'H' is sometimes treated as a consonant and sometimes not (this is the bit that is hard to explain); in French 'H' can be "aspirate" or "non-aspirate"; if it is "non-aspirate" then phonetically it has no value at all and in spelling rules, the word is treated as if it begins with the vowel that follows it - so you write and say "l'hôtel", not "le hôtel"; if it is "aspirate", then it kind of has a sound (a glottal stop when it follows a vowel) and in spelling rules it is treated as a consonant - so you write and say "Le Havre", not "L'Havre". OK so far? When these French words came into English, we didn't pronounce the "H" at the start of words from French that had a non-aspirate "H", so we said " an otel", "an istoric event", etc, and we wrote them as we said them, with 'an' not 'a' Over time, we began to pronounce the "H" at the start of these words in the normal English way, but written language is always more conservative than spoken language and so the "an" spelling was retained and considered "correct". These days, if you always write a', never 'an' before words that begin with 'H', nobody is going to consider it wrong - it just reflects current speech; on the other hand, if you write 'an' in front of anything other than the French loan words where it was originally correct, you don't impress anybody; it's just plain wrong.

@@MadEnglishTV You're welcome. What led me to your video was an American newspaper article about the Trump trial that included the words "an hearing"; I thought "that's just wrong", so I searched for a UA-cam video on the subject and found yours, which was interesting and enjoyable. Incidentally, do I hear a Canadian accent here? We Brits are not too good at differentiating US and Canadian accents, but I worked for a few years, in London, with a couple of guys from Toronto and that's what I think I'm hearing: it's the way you pronounce the "ou" in "about" that reminds me of them.

It happened with me that the native speakers said that my pronunciation is good, even though I did not ask them But people from India in particular say that I am Indian, Philippine, or Chinese What is the problem to know a person from any country Because the goal is just speaking And I am not from them, and I do not think that those letters that they focus on are in my language or at all some people just the're trying to frustrate you I started to feel recently that I do not want to speak English again Because I do not have any motivation There is an application to practice English What happens, I discover that I am talking to a person In the last I found that throughout a conversation they were analyzing my accent from any country I might be HE gives me questions to know this and this makes me not feel comfortable Although they are a beginner, they reside me, and gave a mark even though I did not ask them Even they are not native speakers You discover that you are talking to them while they're playing a game who may be which accent may be

I agree with you Mark, there's no native English speaker who's not mastering the pronunciation. I have watched a video of a female UA-camr, she teaches English and she has millions of subscribers but when she started speaking, I knew right away she is not a native English speaker even though her American accent is close to perfect and her fluency is also spot on.
